Your weekly Los Angeles cheat sheet
Updated July 20, 2026
Who runs this: an independent, community-run page covering LA issues and the 2026 election. We support candidates we believe in, and we tell you who and why (see below). Not affiliated with any campaign. No ads, no funding, just a volunteer.
If your place doesn't cool down, the city runs free air-conditioned cooling centers. Call 211 or see lacity.gov. Check on older neighbors.
Beachside summer cinema, free to attend, parking free after 6pm.
With KCRW's DJ Anthony Valadez. Outdoor, all ages, bring a blanket.
A new state law (SB 79, in effect Jul 1) allows taller apartments near major transit. LA's council answered with a 4-story cap in 57 neighborhoods. What it means (LAist).
Trash dumping, potholes, dead streetlights, graffiti, encampment services: report it free with the MyLA311 app, at myla311.lacity.gov, or just call 311. Add a photo, it genuinely speeds things up, and you can track the request.
A long-reported encampment block: 35 people moved indoors with services, sidewalk cleaned up. Coverage: The Eastsider. Reported something that got fixed? Tell us on the page and we'll feature it.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Vote-by-mail ballots start arriving | ~Oct 5, 2026 |
| Election Day | Tue, Nov 3, 2026 |
Missed the deadline? California has same-day conditional registration at any vote center. Check your status: voterstatus.sos.ca.gov
Everyone in the city votes for Mayor (Bass vs. Raman runoff). Two state senate seats are also open:
| District | Rough geography |
|---|---|
| SD-24 | West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, the Westside |
| SD-26 | Echo Park, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Boyle Heights, Koreatown, East LA and more |
We're transparent about this: it's a supporter-run page, not a neutral outlet. In November we're backing Karen Bass for Mayor, John Erickson in SD-24, and Sarah Rascón in SD-26. We post their records with sources, we don't fabricate, and we label our opinions as ours. Disagree? The comments are open.
